Circumnavigation of the UK

Thursday 30 May 2024 | by Henry Carter

Michael Lambert, a kayaker from South West London will be setting off this weekend attempting to circumnavigate the UK in record time. He aims to use the trip to raise awareness of Aortic Dissection in memory of his mother whom he lost 5 years ago.

Taking on the challenge he will face some of the roughest sea conditions and busiest traffic lanes in the world. The record currently stands at 40days set by Dougal Glaisher in 2023, a huge chunk taken from the 2012 record by Joe Leach in 67days.

Michael will have to average 80+ kilometers a day to achieve this record, camp, sleep and eat wherever he can. His training has included commuting to work from Walton to Chelsea by kayak both ways, circumnavigating Hayling Island in record time (20.4km in 1:51:51) and just generally crunching out lots and lots of kilometers in a boat.

To Michael, after your circumnavigation we hope to see you at an AquaPaddle once you have recovered, or part of your recovery.

To the AquaPaddle community, a trip like this is tough, and is made easier or only possible by the kindness of strangers. Do follow Michaels journey, and know that words of encouragement, shouts of support from the bank, food, hot foot or even a bed for the night are things that make records break. We are a community, we support one another.
