AquaPaddle Irvine

Join us for a FREE non competitive timed 5km paddle around Shewalton water, commonly known as Bookers Pond. On arrival at Bookers Cash N carry, you'll meet our Welcome Hosts who are crew in bright orange t-shirts whom will help you park and show paddlers the path to the event shelter and check in desk. Paddlers will be required to carry their kit 50m from the car park to the waters edge. There is a large grass area which is ideal for warming up and inflating boards, sorting kayaks and canoes. After checking in and kit inspection, paddlers will receive a welcome brief by the captain before entering the water. Accessing the water will be done conservatively and indicated by markers in order to protect the beach embankment and ensure access for all. Please be mindful carrying equipment from the grass to the waters edge as with varying water levels the bank can get steep with a step down onto the sand. Once all paddlers are gathered, await the starter marshals instruction and the timing will start on mass. Marshals will be stationed around the pond edge at set locations no more than 1km apart. if necessary, there are several egress points around the pond. Please note there is only 1 pop up changing tent and portable toilet at the venue. Start and finish at the beach point.

Launch and Start Point

The Launch and Start Point is at the beach, on the southern end of the pond which is directly on the path from the car park. From Bookers Cash n Carry car park follow the obvious path between the two rock boulders, take a right turn and after 150m you will arrive at the water's edge and embankment.

The launch point is a gradual entry from grass to sand, however can become slippery. Take care entering the water and don’t rush.

Please give other AquaPaddlers space to enter the water and move around. Spread out across the whole entry point.

The Route – Circular with one left turn

From the beach. Head clockwise firstly around the white small bhoy turning right and head straight towards the large grey bhoy. Pass the grey bhoy and turn right heading between the reed band and pond edge. Then take another right turn through the obvious gap between the reed band back into the open pond heading back to beach turning left at the orange marker bhoy which lengthens the course. Make a final right turn at the white bhoy to complete the circular

At the northern end has some protruding rock and steel rods from previous quarry times, so keep at least a 10meters space from the bank. If on a SUP, kneel down if coming close to pond edge in shallower water.

Watch out for other water users, particularly those on paddle craft, fishing at the outer edges and Open water swimmers within the marked bhoys.

Complete 5 laps to cover 5km.

Ayrshire Armada SUP Club is supporting the Local AquaPaddle. Other groups and individual paddlers of whatever craft are welcome to lend a hand.
